The LUMITAR 3.5/50 is an Anastigmat lens developed with the same fundamental optical configuration as the ELMAX 3.5/50, designed in 1925 by Max Berek of Leitz.
 
The ELMAX 3.5/50 can be regarded as the original lens that laid the foundation for the subsequent development and legendary reputation of Leica
 
The LUMITAR 3.5/50 was developed through manual optical design, using glass types that closely approximate the optical materials employed at the time, including equivalents for historical glass types that are no longer available today.
 
At f/3.5, spherical aberration produces a gentle veil of flare, while still delivering a high resolving power of 6.5 μm.
 
At f/4, the flare is effectively eliminated, and the lens reaches its peak optical performance at f/8.
 
In the mid-frame area, the meridional and sagittal image surfaces are intentionally kept slightly separated to achieve a flatter field while preserving the distinctive rendering characteristics of the original era
 
With only six air-to-glass surfaces, the lens has a remarkably simple optical path. Combined with full multi-coating, this allows the LUMITAR 3.5/50 to deliver rich, highly faithful color reproduction—a natural, unfiltered color rendition that lets you experience the “true colors” of the scene.
